Improving Traffic in Baldwin County AL May Mean Filling in Wetlands
Baldwin County Commission sparks controversy regarding the filling in of local Wetlands for a safer commute
In an effort to improve traffic and safety along the Eastern Shore of
Alabama, the Baldwin County Commission is requesting the permission of the U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers to fill in an estimated 3.6 acres of wetlands. Although the county signed an agreement to
protect the Fly Creek Watershed area of wetlands when they purchased the land and surrounding lands, they read the contract as
being able to build a bridge that has minimal impact on the wetlands and is
approved by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
The controversy over whether they should be allowed to go
through with the plan will continue. Many residents and environmentalists have requested through the written
word that this not be allowed, while Baldwin County officials consider their
plans acting in the best interest of the safety of the public. Either way, the Baldwin County Commission
will have to explore alternatives to their original plan in the meantime, which may include the
reduction of the size of the bridge or planning something completely different.
