The new Baldwin County Coliseum will be used for the county fair and other functions as well as for emergeny situations

The dedication of the new Baldwin County Coliseum took place
in February, with a warm welcome. The Coliseum
in Robertdale will house exhibits for the annual Baldwin County Fair and act as
a shelter in times of emergency. The
building is 38,000 square feet and can house up to 5,000 people overnight and
up to 2,000 people on a long-term basis; it was also built to withstand
200-mile-per-hour winds. 

The idea for this larger coliseum came from Melinda Hankins,
who hosted the dedication of the building last month, and “Sonny” Hankins, the
Baldwin County Fair manager, when they considered the tragedy of Katrina and
the displacement of people from other states attempting to take refuge
temporarily in Alabama. The facilities
available in the Coliseum include plenty of restrooms, showers, and kitchen areas
for short term or long term use.
