Fairhope Alabama City Council Look to Protecting Wetlands

Fairhope Alabama’s City Council recently established a moratorium which would protect wetlands within the city limits. Under the new ordinance “land disturbance permits” will not be allowed effective immediately and extending to October 15 2008, unless it is changed before this time. The City Council president, Bob Gentle, indicated that putting a hold on ‘land disturbance permits’ will allow the city to work on stormwater ordinances; city officials realize that wetlands naturally absorb water from stormwater runoff so it will not end up in the bay via sewers or creeks. Harmful pollutants are contained in these runoffs and the Fairhope city council wish to address ways of protecting wetlands before more problems arise.
